Equality in America
We hear the word “equality” tossed about a lot, especially during elections when a lot of popular but empty promises are made.
I trust we can all agree that, as citizens, we should all enjoy equal rights… meaning we should all be treated the same. Freedom of speech, voting privileges, and so on.
Often, though, “equality” is used to describe the economic condition of individuals… which can lead to false or unrealistic expectations. The founders of our great country did not set up a socialistic government nor promise everyone ALL the same comforts of life. They promised “equal opportunity”, not “equal outcome”.
One gives individuals the freedom to work hard and enjoy the fruits of their effort. The other says everyone will receive the same benefits regardless of the effort they put forth.
The former is an environment of hope, reward, and liberty to pursue dreams and express individuality. The latter eliminates the return associated with taking risks. removes the motivation to work harder (or better), and increases an attitude of dependency.
One provides an incentive to excel and the other destroys creativity.
Which do YOU prefer, equal opportunity or equal outcome? Did our forefathers get it right?
I think so.
