Political Accountability
I’m of the opinion that the majority of our elected officials are politicians first and representatives second. They are very good at saying they are there to serve you (and me) but their actions speak otherwise… they are really there to serve themselves (or their party). That old saying is true: actions speak louder than words.
When a child is allowed to get away with bad behavior, that kid quickly learns that there is no punishment despite the parental threats and warnings. The bad behavior will continue because it’s what the child wants to do and there is no incentive to do otherwise. They have learned they will not be held accountable for their actions.
Politicians are much shrewder than children, though. They not only learn they can get away with saying one thing and doing another, they start “spinning” what they said to manipulate people into thinking they spoke truthfully in the first place. And, as often as not, their blind followers actually believe it!
Sadly, this game has gotten out of control… and it is hurting our country.
WE can no longer afford to delude ourselves into thinking our representatives can just TALK about problems and solve them. WE cannot allow the politicians to bullheadedly take the “party line” and fail to find reasonable compromises that make positive strides toward actually solving a problem. Speech-making, TV appearances, radio interviews, and self-indulgent tirades on the floor of Congress are not getting the job done… and will never get the job done.
Our representatives were elected to do a job… to LEAD the country… to make decisions that are GOOD for our country… and they are NOT doing it. NOW is the time to make it very clear that WE will no longer tolerate this bad behavior… and will replace them at the earliest opportunity if they don’t GET SERIOUS about doing their job immediately.
