Protesting Idiots
With the conventions of both major political parties going on, there is a lot of media coverage and talk about what government should and should not be doing for “us”. Like moths to a light, these events have attracted a wide range of groups staging protests.
One of the wonderful RIGHTS we have in the U.S. is FREEDOM OF SPEECH. If protesters want to carry signs and chant slogans at the conventions, go for it. I’m not convinced anyone is persuaded by such activities but, if it makes you happy, it is your right to speak your mind.
Some protesters, however, seem compelled to cross the boundary between a peaceful demonstration and unlawful actions. I saw footage on the news where some idiots, noticing the cameras were on them, threw large rocks through windows of businesses. I simply do not understand how a protester thinks destroying public or personal property helps deliver their message.
And it is almost laughable when you hear some of the protesters interviewed… some have no REAL idea why they are protesting (I suspect it’s just a chance to “party”) and others are woefully misinformed about the responsibilities and obligations of our government (or possibly delusional). I even heard one individual say this:
”I believe health care should be a right.”
Pleeeeeze.
While I’m all for making many health care options available to everyone, it is simply ridiculous to put health care in the same category as the freedom of speech, trial by jury of peers, and the right to vote. Maybe having a car should be a right, too! A chicken in every pot!!!
Aside from the obvious damage done when things get out of control, it aggravates me that the visual images of violent protests will be broadcast around the world. People in other countries will get the impression that we are a nation of people out of control.
One sad truth about all this:
WE pay for the extra police needed to enforce the peace at these conventions. So, whle I am pleased to extend to others the same right I have to express our opinions, I am NOT happy about having to foot the bill for their EXCESSIVE activities. At that point, the views of such protesters have gone “beyond my nose” and into my wallet… and I resent THEM making ME pay for THEIR “orchestrated outrage.”
