Have We Lost Our Course?
Seems to me that, over the past 50 years or so, the U.S. has lost our moral compass.
Those in the majority were tolerant enough to allow the minority to get a strong foothold in our basic institutions and, gradually, some of the core tenets upon which our great nation was founded have been eroded. Specifically, “freedom OF religion” has become “freedom FROM religion”. Instead of teaching right and wrong, our culture is no longer taught accountability. Respect for life has been diluted by the endorsement of abortions as a means of birth control… even partial birth abortions, which are an abomination.
People are being indoctrinated to believe that government knows what’s best for us, should have control over many aspects of our lives, and will take care of us. Businesses are suffering on several fronts: government either inducing or coercing certain activities is manipulating normal market forces and the integrity of management has been diminished by the selfish, greedy, immoral, and short-sited decisions.
The direction is pretty clear. The only question is whether WE, the people, will wake up in time and take a strong enough stand to reverse it. If so, we can save our country. If not, we will pass the point of no return and our nation, as we know and love it, will cease to exist.
Here is a small indication of an impending event:
The new Congress and Administration are moving fast toward passing a new law euphemistically called the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). Among other things:
- FOCA will do away with state laws on parental involvement, on partial birth abortion, and on all other protections.
- FOCA will compel taxpayer funding of abortions.
- FOCA will force faith-based hospitals and healthcare facilities to perform abortions.
The implications of just these changes could be devastating. We could have the government paying for abortions of young women who are not old enough to vote and without the knowledge of their parents. Can you imagine the abuses that might lead to?
I take exception to the last item, though. While the laws might have the legal power to force faith-based hospitals to perform abortions, here’s what I think will happen instead. Some of those hospitals are truly driven by religious beliefs… religion is the very foundation upon which they are built.
A brief aside: many people don’t realize that the FIRST hospitals in the history of the world were started by Christian organizations. Even to this day, MOST of the hospitals in the world are charitable arms of religious groups. (The same is true of universities, but that’s another discussion.)
So, think about the deep conflict that will be established if the government mandates CATHOLIC hospitals to provide abortions! There has already been discussion of the hospitals shutting down rather than compromise the basic beliefs supported by their faith. Now, consider this:

First, can our healthcare system stand the closure of such a large portion of the “supply”? More important, though, would it be RIGHT to essentially FORCE them out of business?
Last, consider that other faith-based organizations (Jewish, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc.) make up a bulk of the remaining hospitals!
NOW is the time for good people to come to their senses and get government OUT of the business of funding abortions and forcing charitable religious organizations to forego fundamental tenets.
