Popular Economics
Not that it’s new at all, but I think the frequency is increasing: our legislators jump into action to pass laws or approve expenditures in response to “popular demand”, to address some problem that has currently caught the attention of the media, which has whipped the public into a frenzy. Sadly, there is no way the “problem”, assuming it is a legitimate one (and many/most are not), could possibly be solved by those laws or money.
Just as the public has become a fast food culture, we are becoming a fast politics culture… we want solutions NOW! And, just as a fast food meal ONCE IN A WHILE can be satisfying and do no harm, a steady diet of quick draw law will inevitably lead to a hodge podge of conflicting government programs that do no more than waste money… not to mention time and effort.
We elect our leaders to make well-thought-out decisions! Anybody can react to popular feeling, see which way the wind is blowing, and throw money at a problem just to look good… it doesn’t take any exceptional skill or knowledge to do that.
Here’s a fact: many problems CAN be solved but most will take some time. Our short-term mentality will catch up with us at some point unless the foresighted can effectively communicate a clear picture of the results (or lack thereof).
At this point in time, we need some honest, courageous leaders without an agenda (other than tell the truth) who can connect with the people, explain alternatives in concise, powerful language, and gain their unwavering support on the issues.
When was the last time we saw such a person? I think we’re about due again.
