Think!
I believe it was IBM that used this as an advertising tag line many years ago: Think! This was back when IBM was the symbol of corporate efficiency, integrity, and success. They were also a good corporate citizen, very involved in the community and well respected internationally. The saying at the time went: what’s good for IBM is good for America. To a large extent, that was true.
Times change, of course.
I believe what really changed was the institutionalization of IBM. They became locked into some bad habits, fell prey to thinking there was no need for improvement, and… well… they became arrogant. (”They”, of course, refers to people within the company.)
I suspect that a similar attitude has become prevalent in the halls of Congress and other government offices, from the highest in the land to the lowest, from federal to municipal. Does that mean EVERY government representative is arrogant or stuck in a rut? No… but I bet most are. Whether its practicing their brand of politics or exercising their bureaucratic discretion, the “government” (again, the people within the organizations) has become so accustomed to “the way things are done” that they have lost sight of the way they SHOULD be done.
What we desperately need today are THINKING LEADERS AND EMPLOYEES who have the DISCIPLINE to do what is best for our country and not just for themselves… and the COURAGE to stand up for what is right, not what is expedient.
The sword swings both ways, though.
What we ALSO desperately need today are THINKING CITIZENS who have enough PATRIOTISM to put the needs of our country before their own immediate personal interests.
