Similarity of Politics and Religion
I strikes me that politics and religion share many similarities, especially in the way many people “practice” it.
There are the mainstream devout, true believers who live according to their beliefs and actively participate in the process. They are the few.
There are the peripheral believers, just as serious but widely scattered. They are the fewer.
There are the agnostic. The ones who have no beliefs and do not participate, confident it won’t make any difference at all. They are the least.
And there are the mainstream followers. Weak in knowledge of their purported beliefs and weaker in how they live them. They profess deep understanding yet are truly shallow for the most part, and align based on the acceptance of others rather than their own convictions. They are the numerous. And the group to be feared most since they can readily be seduced and misled.
Religious choice among this very large group is, and should remain, a personal matter since it involves just them.
Political choice is a different matter. Their judgment can affect everyone else. Seems to me EDUCATION is the only solution. If more people understand the importance and impact of their political decisions as well as how our government really works, perhaps they will exert a bit more effort, assess the facts, and make more knowledgeable decisions in the voting booth.
