I’ve contended before that LESS government is BETTER government… and I stand by that. I point at the current financial situation as an example of where Congress intruded in the market process, imposed requirements to loan money to those who otherwise couldn’t qualify, and the market… playing by these “new rules” (which were artificial and […]

I’m not going to delve into all the political details that emerged after Sarah Palin was chosen as John McCain’s running mate, but I do find one aspect particularly interesting. This has nothing to do with the personalities involved in this election but, rather a situation that has come, once again, to the forefront. Ms. […]

With the conventions of both major political parties going on, there is a lot of media coverage and talk about what government should and should not be doing for “us”. Like moths to a light, these events have attracted a wide range of groups staging protests.
One of the wonderful RIGHTS we have in the U.S. […]

Like many, I have been watching the Olympics. I truly enjoy some of the categories and, while others are not my favorites, it is even fun to watch “the best” in those sports. It difficult to imagine the time and effort expended to achieve the level of perfection displayed by all the athletes.
Some of the […]

Here we go again… some economically ignorant Congressmen are jumping on the results of a recent report by the GAO that indicates companies try to avoid paying federal income taxes.
First, please remember that companies don’t really pay taxes… people do. Companies pass taxes through as a cost of doing business. Their customers pay the taxes. […]

I’ve often spoke of the need for our education system to be reformed. It has become too institutionalized, supports primarily the needs and wants of the teachers and teachers’ union (which has become one of the single largest political entities) rather than the requirements of the students, our children, the next generation of leaders of […]

Before making my main point, let me acknowledge that the economy is not going great guns. There are certainly some problems, the most significant (in my opinion) is all the fallout from the subprime housing market fiasco.
An aside: The subprime mess could have been avoided and was fueled by both greed and politics from the […]

The job of government is to provide certain services that we, as individuals, can’t provide for ourselves… police and fire departsments, the military, building roads and bridges, and so on. I object when either elected officials (politicians) or bureaucrats (career government employees) overreach and try to control the lives of citizens in a manner beyond […]

All too often, people look at a problem and try to propose a perfect solution. While that is a good goal, it is most frequently an unrealistic goal. Most solutions are just practical ones… the best option given the circumstances at the time. Sometimes, it is close to a perfect solution but other times it […]

Ha! I saw this article describing how a policeman was fired because he kept going to a local coffee shop and demanded free coffee. He even threatened slower emergency response if they refused.
Obviously, a misguided individual. Imagine, a government employee asking for additional favors in return for doing his job.
Hmmm…. it seems like a thin […]
